Magoebaskloof is renowned for it’s trout waters and fly fishing. There are a number of beautiful lakes, dams and rivers where you can fish. Visitor permits are required and can be obtained from the various establishments.

Fishing Spots & Info:

  1. Haenertsburg Trout Association (HTA) – situated on the banks of the Ebenezer Dam. Trout fishing, catch and release – day permits available. Contact Poppie 083 290 1962 or email: for HTA permits. Click on the link for HTA tariffs. Visit the HTA website for details on all their fishing venues.
  2. Ebenezer Dam. Bass fishing – no permit needed, first come – first fish. Ebenezer Dam is open to the public and any legal method of angling is permitted. Boats and other watercraft also permitted. No HTA permits needed to fish this water. (Stillwater) Trout (B/R) Bass (LM/SM), Red Breast Kurper, Blue Kurper, Vlei Kurper, Barbel, Carp.
  3. Dap Naude Dam, R71 about 10km north of Haenertsburg. Access and fishing is restricted to members of the Haenertsburg Trout Association (HTA). However, permits for trout and bass fishing can be purchased from The Elms (015 276 4905) There is a public picnic site nearby under the oak trees next to the Broederstroom River. Brown & Rainbow trout.
  4. Waterwheel Retreat – Fly fishing. Trophy water. Letaba River directly below the Ebenezer Dam wall. Brown and Rainbow trout. Catch and release only.
  5. Cheerio Trout Fishing – Catch & Release, privately owned, day permit required & own fly equipment required. Road L4.1, Magoebaskloof.  (Cheerio Farm, L4.1 Road)
  6. Zwakala River Retreat – Catch & Release, private waters, fishing on the river frontage. Contact the establishment for their day rates and bookings.
  7. Stanford Lake Lodge, A21 Stanford Farm. Trout & bass fishing. Some very large black bass in Stanford that may be removed if you catch them. Some trophy size Vlei Kurpers live in the structure along the margins. Spinning tackle allowed but no treble hooks.
  8. Mountain Fly Fishing – Rainbow & Brown Trout, Catch & Release, private waters in 5 dams. Road N4, Houtbosdorp. Contact the establishment for their day rates.
  9. Silver Mist Resort, Haenertsburg. Catch & Release, 3 private dams, bass fishing.
  10. Broederstroom – This venue is only open to HTA Trout members and their guests so as to protect the fish that breed in the stream and stock the dam.
